Error Message in Google Chat

3/22/2006 10:10:00 PM
Google's record of "uptime" has always impressed me. I'm not saying there's never downtime or delayed product roll out, but rarely do I log in to any Google application and see an error message. It surprised me, then, to log into Gmail this afternoon and see this error which blends seamlessly into the Chats interface as if it expects to be displayed every once in awhile:

"We're experiencing technical difficulties that may prevent your chats from being sent."

I do not expect this connection fault to be a recurring problem, but I do wonder if it is in any way indicative of some revisions to the interface going on behind the scenes.

The difference between Google and say Yahoo is that, Google lets you know that something is wrong by giving you a descriptive message like "Oops .. keep your fingers crossed " for Gmail or the technical difficulty message for Chats, while Yahoo, does nothing, so you dont notice it. So, Google is punished for being truthful to the user.

I wouldn't say Google is "punished." It's expected that complicated apps like Gmail will have intermittent problems. Google's few yet descriptive error messages instead contribute to the perceived "honesty" of Google's products. I see the witty "Oops" messages as a good thing.

Over on Tech.Life.Blogged, Scott has another example of an error in Gmail's Chat console. This time citing network admin level disabling, see his post here.

Hey Guys, The reason you see this message.
We're experiencing technical difficulties that may prevent your chats from being sent.
If you install Mail notifier, This will happen periodically. So you need not worry about this message.
Hope google people will find some solution soon.

I am receiving this message CONSTANTLY. I don't know if it's my computer, my internet provider, or Gmail. I am suffering massive delays getting around the internet entirely. So I don't know if the delays are somehow a result from the Gmail problem, or if the Gmail problem is a result of another issue. It is not an occasionaly message for me, it's constantly in and out every 1 or 2 minutes. Any insight would help. Thanks!

I have a PC and Laptop both running IE7 - the laptop runs Vista and chat always connects from gmail window - the PC runs XP and NEVER connects to chat from gmail. So it's not the account or the router or the firewall or the IP Config or DNS as everythignelse works on both.... Do have scripting and active-x disabled by default on PC - unless in trusted sites - (enabled on laptop ) - will sniff packets to check sites.. bt am fairly sure it's a pc web browser problem - maybe after upgrade to IE7 on XP or else an XP patch ???

Hello.

I had same problems but only with Internet Explorer under WinXP SP2. Firefox was working OK.

Try to add *.google.com to trusted sites. It helps me.

Simply deleting cookies didn't help us. I was able to reset whatever seems to be blocking Chat within IE7 by clicking on Tools, Phishing Filter, Phishing Filter Settings. There is an option to rest Internet Explorer Settings. I clicked on that button which appears to delete all files, add-ons and settings associated with IE7 for that specific sign-on. I had to restart IE7 after doing this was taken through the inital setup where you choose your search provider. Once I did the inital setup of IE7, I went to our gmail and Chat worked immediately.

I've been stuck with this issue for days since updating antivirus software - tried everything including the https://, and disabling certain aspects in the the new software..

This method of adding "*.google.com" to the trusted sites has Finally worked!!

Big thumbs up, thanks for leaving that comment!

I'm DEFinitely going to write up a How-To for this on my review site. Soo frustrating when you get this problem!

Thanks again!
